Papers please comrades

The mention of identity cards immediately takes me back to my childhood. “It’s a free country”, my peers and I would cheekily exclaim when challenged by petty jobsworths. Sadly, today, under Labour, the UK is rapidly transitioning into an authoritarian state. The Stasi (East German secret police) could only have dreamt of the omnipresent surveillance to which the British state now subjects its citizens. Successive Governments have cynically used noble causes as a cover for greater intrusion into our personal lives. These include child protection, the prevention of terrorism and the UK’s general descent into becoming a low-trust society.  From the “suspicionless” stop and search powers enshrined in the Terrorism Act 2000, to the attempts to undermine encryption and anonymity in the Online Safety Act 2023, the assault on the freedoms we once took for granted is relentless. Once the “Digital Pound”, a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), is launched, there will be even more opportunities for control.  I haven’t even broached old Two-Tier’s crazed Digital ID plans yet!

Returning to my childhood, I fondly recall Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989). I remember excitedly taking this out on VHS (remember that?) from the video store that used to be up the road from The Bittern on Thornhill Park Road. My grandparents lived through the Blitz. They therefore took particular satisfaction from the scene where Sallah (John Rhys-Davies), flanked by Dr Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott), punched one of the Gestapo officers in the face. This, in response to a demand for “papers, please!”  Grandad was not a fan of harassment from petty officialdom. As it happens, nor were many of his contemporaries.

ID cards were last compulsory in the UK during the Second World War and its immediate aftermath. The National Registration Act 1939 was introduced to further national security and support rationing. However, once the war ended, the police couldn’t resist turning ID cards into tools of petty interference. This served to alienate the public. Things came to a head in the now largely forgotten case of Willcock v Muckle (1951). A motorist who stopped for a routine traffic issue took exception to being asked to produce his ID card.  Lord Chief Justice Goddard offered a scolding critique of this mission creep:

“This Act was passed for security reasons during the war, and it is quite clear that it is now being used for a purpose for which it was never intended … To use Acts of Parliament passed for different purposes in this way is wholly unreasonable.”

Here, at least, the judiciary acted in the spirit of England’s great common law tradition. Rooted in the Magna Carta (1215) and championed by the likes of Sir Edward Coke, the bench had thrown down the baton. Churchill gladly picked it up. Churchill abolished ID cards in 1952, shortly after commencing his second premiership.

Roll forward to today. Digital ID represents a clear and present danger to this tradition, only amplified by technology. Like the swathes of Blairite anti-terror legislation, it is apt to be inverted. The temptation to terrorise law-abiding citizens through sinister data mining would be irresistible. The proliferation of the hated “non-crime hate incidents” is already an Orwellian jackboot stamping on the face of free expression. Centralised ID systems would confirm our relegation to the status of little more than walking taxable digits.

Starmer’s claims that Digital ID will reduce illegal immigration are laughable. Rogue employers and illegal immigrants already routinely ignore right-to-work checks. Labour knows this. Illegal immigration is just being used as the latest cynical cover for yet more state meddling in our lives. Labour’s motive is control, not security. As their economic woes deepen, Labour is seeking new ways to tax, track, and regulate the people of this country.

Australian author Anna Funder described East Germany as “Stasiland”. If Labour gets its way, Britain risks becoming “New Stasiland.” Reform UK Southampton says enough is enough. We must resist.

Tax Raid Alert

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is reported to be making ready, proposals for the next budget, that will target pensioners once again.  Labour may think that pensioners are a soft easy target. They will find out that they are mistaken at the ballot box. Yet again, private landlords may not escape Labours attempt to extract more money out of them. To penalise the landlords is to once again, threaten the provision of private rented homes.

Self employed people, of which there are many in Southampton, are also set to be targeted in a mad dash for cash to pay for Labours crippling policies that has seen unemployment rise and companies go to the wall. Its why Britain needs Reform UK.

Radical, reforming policies on immigration

Nigel Farage has announced measures that a Reform UK government will put in place regarding immigration, migration and benefits. Reform UK have clarified that its policy of abolishing indefinite leave to remain, (ILR), would not apply to EU citizens / immigrants with settled status. Like other country's, visas will have to be renewed after a five year period. Reform UK will end the prospect of freebies and give aways for economic migrants, instead, putting British citizens at the head of the queue.

Tick Toc death threat

The fallout of the assassination of Charlie Kirk has now seen a death threats made against Nigel Farage. The radical far left are the main danger to democracy and the freedom of speech.

These online death threats, warrant police investigation and subsequent arrest.

                       Will that happen?

Reform UK Southampton is shocked and saddened by the killing of Charlie Kirk while speaking publicly at a university campus. He died a martyr - an activist who did not show fear or stop his work despite threats and intimidation from those who did not agree with him.

Charlie had spoken passionately about the state of the United Kingdom in particular at the Oxford student union. His desire for a better United Kingdom was inspiring and should be remembered as a friend of this country. Charlie inspired and educated many millions of people through his presence, and while I may not agree with all of his views, I respected his right to speak his mind and his respect for his audience.

While we do not know the motives behind the individual who committed this heinous crime; it highlights and echo's the concerning rise of political violence and extremism across the Western world. Violence should never be the answer when you disagree with someone. We hope that justice will prevail and heartfelt wishes for his family at this distressing time.

High court ignores the will of the people

Asylum seekers can remain at a hotel in Epping, Essex, after the government wins its Court of Appeal case. The High Court previously said the 138 men being housed at the Bell Hotel had to leave by 12 September – they will now be allowed to stay. The High Court have put the rights of British citizens below those of the uninvited, undocumented male economic migrants.

A sad day for Britain and its once respected legal system.

Labour - still losing the plot

Nigel Farage has hit back at Science Minister Peter Kyle, saying he was "absolutely disgusted" by the claim that the Reform UK leader is "on the side" of predators like Jimmy Savile.

It was noticeable that Kyle avoids mentioning the elite police unit who are to monitor posts regarding migrants in hotels. Shouldn't the police be monitoring those who would do children harm instead of concerned citizens worried about undocumented young migrants let loose in the community?

Furthermore, the bill prohibits 16/17 yr olds (who Labour have given the vote to) from accessing online information about political and current affairs. What a dire lack of planning and joined up thinking from Labour.

Labour are using online child safety as a smoke screen to cover up the failures on the lack of border security and illegal migrants.

Labour wants to tax state pension

It is being reported that Labour are preparing to tax those only receiving one of the lowest and worst state pensions in Europe.

This is because of the reckless spending of the Labour government that is out of control.

Yet Labour can find money to send to Syria. A county that is led by a man who has a past connected to Islamic Terrorists. Taxpayers money continues to be sent overseas while Britons continue to face rising costs and for some, abject poverty. One of Labour's stock answers to criticism is that people can always claim state benefit. Who wants to rely upon state benefits all of the time?

Reform UK's answer is to raise the tax threshold to £20,000 that would exempt senior citizens who depend on the state pension as their only source of income. The change in the threshold would also benefit those in low paid employment.

It's why Britain is turning to Reform UK.

Fixing Welfare to Save Britain’s and Southampton’s Future

At Reform UK, we believe in a welfare system that is fair, responsible, and sustainable. Today’s system is failing, not just at the national level, but here in Southampton as well. It costs billions, encourages dependency, and places growing pressure on our NHS, schools, and hardworking taxpayers.

The Problem: Debt is Drowning Britain

The UK’s national debt now stands at over £2.8 trillion, equivalent to around 96% of its GDP (House of Commons). This is the highest level since the early 1960s, and it continues to rise. Each month, the government borrows billions more just to cover spending.

If nothing changes, the Office for Budget Responsibility warns that debt will triple and exceed 270% of GDP by the mid-2070s, posing a threat to vital services and our economic future.

For Southampton residents, this means:

  • fewer local resources for healthcare and education;

  • higher taxes for working families; and

  • more strain on public services already under pressure.

Labour’s Approach: Temporary Fixes, More Debt

Labour claims its recent changes to the Welfare Bill strike the “right balance.” In reality, they amount to little more than delays and reviews, patchwork policies that fail to address the core issue: a system too expensive and open to abuse.

Their protections for existing claimants, while well-intentioned, leave the root problems unaddressed, leading to rising costs, increased borrowing, and greater pressure on future taxpayers.

Our Plan: Simple, Fair and Firm

Reform UK believes in protecting the truly vulnerable, but also in restoring common sense and responsibility to the system. Our plan includes:

  • work for those who can: If you’re fit to work, you should work. Benefits must be reserved for those with serious illness or disability;

  • independent face-to-face assessments: Ensuring support is directed only to those who genuinely need it, thereby reducing waste and abuse;

  • time limits for job seekers: You must find work within four months or accept one of the first two suitable offers, or your benefits will stop; and

Together, let’s reform the system, support those who need it, and build a stronger future for Southampton and the entire UK.

Back Real Reform. Back Reform UK.

Nigel Farage woos British business

Nigel Farage has been having private meetings with business leaders to inform them of the party's plans to get our nation back on the road to prosperity.

Included in those plans are the inclusion of top business minds into government positions where real life experience of, for example, manufacturing, financial services and subsequent employment opportunities are desperately needed here in the U.K. Compare that with the far left socialist policies of Starmer & Co which is deindustrialising the nation and pushing wealth creators overseas because of the high burden of taxation and regulation.

Reform UK are planning for the future. Under Labour, there is no future except for longer dole queues and reliance upon state benefits. What would you prefer?

Spending other peoples money

Rachel Reeves spending review is not surprisingly, drawing a lot of criticism.

For instance, how is the winter fuel allowance going to be funded?

Will money cut from other benefits such as PIP be transferred over?

Spending cuts to the police budget is inappropriate at a time of a burgeoning population that sees increased criminal activity, much due to foriegn gangs here in Britian.

The NHS is to have yet more money poured into it, without any notion of seeking out wasteful spending in order to save money.

There is nothing to give British business hope or comfort for the future as business for many, begins to stagnate. £2 billion for investment in AI and funding for a British Business Bank is not going to offer immeadiate help to businesses who are over burdened with high energy costs, additional NI costs. Corperation tax remains unchanged at a time when oeverseas investors see the UK as an unfriendly place to start a new business or even invest in an existing business.

Economists fear yet another round of direct / indirect tax hikes, that include council tax.

Yet, Labour's obessive drive to Net Zero, continues to hoover up taxpayers money, both here at home and abraod.

Nigel Farage has warned that Britain is staring down the barrel of a recession. Richard Tice reminded the Chancellor earlier, that the UK economy had contracted by 0.3 per cent.

Labour offers nothing for an economic revival. Its just more of the same old crazy socialism that the country cannot afford.

It's why Britian needs Reform UK .

The challenge

Today, Nigel held a press conference outlining just part of the future Reform govt program, as well as having a dig at the opposition.

He also took up Keir Starmer's challenge of a head to head debate. Will the P.M. pick up the guantlet?

The Brexit sellout

  • Labour has moved the UK back into the orbit of the EU. The biggest failng is migration. There is no mention of a returns deal or even how to stop the boats. Starmer claims his deal is good for our borders. How's that?

  • The UK has agreed to a youth mobility scheme that takes in young EU citizens aged 18 to 30. This will see another flood of cheap labour that will supress wages and make it more difficult for our young to find work. This will also affect students who need to supplememt thier grant in order to live while studying.

  • The UK will also be required to align with EU food rules, and grant access to our fishing waters under a new 12-year deal. Did you vote for that? EU boats take at least half of the allowed fish from our waters. This is set to rise.

  • Our ability to negotiate other global trade deals, notably with the US and the Commonwealth, will be undermined, particularly if those agreements require us to diverge from EU food standards.

  • Worse still, the UK will now be exposed to the European Court of Justice again, with full oversight. If Britain strays from EU regulatory frameworks, it will face litigation.

  • There’s also the prospect of joining the EU’s new 'Safe' defence fund, giving British firms access to EU weapons procurement. The UK will contribute to the fund, which means there's a risk that we may pay more into the fund than we get back.

  • Starmer boasts about holidaymakers being allowed to use e-gates in EU airports. That’s no where near a win, given that UK e-gates have already welcomed EU nationals for years.

  • What else is Starmer  not telling us about further give aways?

  • This is why Britian needs Reform UK and Nigel Farage as Primeminister.

No substance in Starmer's new immigration  policy

Starmer has rushed to put window dressing in Labour’s window in an effort to present a workable migration policy. Labour are clearly shaken by the rise of Reform UK. Did you notice that there was no mention of stopping the boats or closing down migrant hotels. No mention of smashing the gangs.

He blames the Tories for open borders when we all know that Tony Blair opened the borders. Starmer even claims Labour coined the phrase, take back control. How many more fables is he going to conjour up?

Labour remain committed to the ECHR and human rights act that has been used to curtail action on migration. The very things that the left used to block deportations attmpted by Sunak.

You can never trust Labour!

Sarah Pochin's first day at Westminister - 06.05.25

It wasnt an earthquake that you heard on May 1st, it was the sound of voters passing judgement on the Westminister 'uniparty', that ultimately saw both Labour and Conservative, fired!

Already, Reform UK have announced that no foreign flags will be flown from Reform UK controlled public buildings.

Nigel Farage himself has suggested that those in council taxpayer funded DEI positions, had better start looking for alternative employment.

The Turquoise revolution has began in earnest.

Below, is a summary of the results from May 1st. For greater detail, checkout the website of your own local authority. Here in Southampton where we were not scheduled to have election until next year, the list of potentail candidates is growing. Members wishing to be considered as a candidate need only get in touch with us via the 'Contact Page'. Time for payback, time for Reform UK

Who do you believe?

Last week, it was worked out that The Labour Party had mentioned Reform UK, forty times.

Yes, 40 times!!! How desperate Labour are, to resort to giving the public, false information (or lies) over Reform's plans for the NHS. So, Wes Streeting et al, here it is yet again.

Clue: It's the right hand image that offers Reform UK's position on the NHS.

The last of the UK blast furnaces that was sold off to China, faces closure as the Chinese owners cut off crucial supplies.

The U.K. will be the only major nation unable to produce quality steel that is used in military and high spec applications.

The closure will add to the unemployment figures that are rising under Labour. All thanks to 'stupid net zero'.

We will keep you informed of important current events and of course, those events that the regular news media outlets find to be an inconvenient truth
